One of the last things we tend to consider when organizing time away is the possibility that things might not go as planned. However, if you are involved in an accident or become ill while on holiday, especially abroad, it is important to be aware of what action to take.

  1. Be Prepared

One of the most important things to do before you go is to purchase some travel insurance. While it might be impossible to avoid an accident, steps can be taken to cut out the stress and the cost of accessing treatment and organizing transport home if you are injured.

  1. Report the Accident

The accident should be reported to a number of people. Report the accident to your travel rep if you have one, your travel agent in the UK and the owner of the place in which the accident happened, e.g. the hotel manager. You may also need to inform the local police.

  1. Seek Advice from a Medical Professional

Make sure you see a doctor. Remember to keep a record of your visit and any medical reports or prescriptions you’re given. You might need these as evidence should you decide to make a claim for compensation.

  1. Witness Statements and Accident Reports

Gather contact details from anyone else involved in the incident, and anyone who saw it.. If possible, ask witnesses to write down what they saw. As soon as you can, write a detailed description of the events. Try to be specific and remember as much information as you can. Even something that did not appear important at the time might prove vital later on.

  1. Take photographs

Photographs of the cause of the accident, or simply where the accident took place can be very helpful should you wish to pursue a compensation claim.

  1. Other Evidence

Keep records of all receipts, medical fees, additional hotel bills, travel expenses and all other costs relating to the accident or injury. You may be able to put in a claim for these as part of any compensation you’re given.

  1. Compensation

You may wish to apply for compensation if you’ve been injured on holiday. Compensation can be paid for your pain and suffering. Under UK law, whether or not you have travel insurance, you might be able to make a claim for compensation. If the accident occurred at your hotel, you may have the right to make a claim for personal injury against your travel agent or tour operator. Contact a solicitor experienced in holiday compensation claims for advice as to whether you might have a valid case. Many firms operate on a no win, no fee contract. Act quickly. There is a time limit for personal injury claims, and it may be harder to prove later on.
